RV Roof Vent Cover Replacement
Have your ever driven off your campsite and left the RV roof vent cover open, only to have it get snagged by a branch, or worse, blown off on the freeway? Or maybe your RV roof vent covers are just brittle or cracked from years of exposure to the sun. Here’s a great article showing how you can do it yourself (DIY) RV Roof Vent Cover Replacement.
When you need an RV roof vent cover replacement, the best place to start is with an examination of the old roof vent cover that will be replaced. Measure the size and study the type of hinges. Also, check out the type of arm-opening mechanism it has.
Of course another way to choose your RV roof vent cover is to measure the actual opening of your vent in your RV vehicle or RV Trailer. There are a lot of standard RV roof vent cover sizes, but as you will see in this video, there are exceptions to the rule.
Also, see if you can determine the name of the manufacturing company that is on the RV roof vent cover you are replacing.
Lastly, see how your current vent cover is attached at the hinge. There are basically three types of roof vent cover hinges.
There can be a continuous, rolled metal type of hinge that attaches to the RV vent cover.
The second type of RV vent cover hinge are plastic hinges that snap onto the RV vent or vent cover.
The third type is usually a variation of the metal types of hinges
The last thing to examine on your old roof vent cover is the type of arm used to raise and lower the vent cover.
Once you know the size, the hinge type, and the arm type used to raise/lower your vent cover, you’ll be ready to purchase a vent cover replacement.
Great, you have the replacement RV roof vent cover, now let’s put it on your RV and protect your investment!
First, from the inside, generally there are a minimum of four screws that hold your vent in place. Start by removing those 4 (or more) screws.
Next, remove any screw that is holding in the crank mechanism that controls the arm which raises and lowers your vent. This step may be skipped on some RV roof vent covers.
You may need to remove the RV vent cover screen from the inside of your RV, in case any debris has fallen onto that cannot be reached from the outside.

If you were able to purchase a matching roof vent cover, the installation should be very easy, as the installation is just reversing the steps you took in the removal.
Start by attaching the new roof vent cover’s hinge by either sliding or snapping on the hinge to the roof vent.
Reattach the arm mechanism, from inside or outside based on removal
If you removed your screen from inside, you should replace it from the same position.
Finally, replace the screws that you removed from the inside, and any screw for the crank handle.
Check the operation of your new RV roof vent cover.
When the vent cover is operating smoothly, apply fresh caulking or sealant.
While you are on the roof, check all of your seals as water is an RV’s worst enemy.
